Client Terms & Conditions

Clients will be sent a copy of our counselling agreement to read and sign before startring work together. Below is a summary of this document.

Please read and ensure you understand and agree to all the points in this document, as they form an important part of our working relationship. If you have any questions or concerns, please speak with me before signing this agreement or paying for your first session.

1. Your eligibility for therapy with me

• You are 18 years of age or older.

• You are not a resident of, nor do you reside in, USA or Canada.

• You understand that I do not provide an emergency service. This means that in the event of a crisis, I may not be available for an unplanned session, and you will need to contact alternative forms of support immediately.

2. Sessions, Bookings, Rescheduling & Cancelations

• Fees are currently £50 or 55€ per 50-minute session, or one therapeutic email, paid online, in advance of the session start time. If a scheduled session begins late, it will still need to finish on time.

• Payment is by bank transfer. You will receive an email invoice a few days before your session. This must be paid in advance of your session.

• I review fees twice a year and will notify you at least four weeks in advance of any changes.

• Webcam, voice and messaging sessions usually take place weekly, usually at the same time, and on the same day each week.

• For email therapy, you agree to send your email, of no more than 600 words, on the same day each week and understand that I will respond within three working days.

• If you are unable to attend a session, or respond to email counselling by the agreed day, please let me know as soon as possible by sending an email to [email protected] Once a counselling session is confirmed, I am committed for that session. Should you need to cancel a session, I require 72 hours’ notice. If you do not provide 72 hours’ notice, or if you miss a session, or fail to send an email therapy message on the agreed day, you will be asked to cover the fee(s) in full. This is because your session time is held for you and will not be used by someone else.

• If I cancel a session, I will aim to give you as much notice as possible. If I cancel a session with less than 72 hours’ notice, you will be entitled to reschedule and receive a discount on a subsequent session. Please see my website for more details.

• Repeated cancellations may result in the termination of counselling.

• Please attend sessions free from alcohol and non-prescribed drugs.

• I will recommend that we regularly review our work together. Your honesty during these reviews are very important to me.

• Please do not record sessions without my consent. Also, be aware that devices such as Google Assistant or Amazon Alexa may record what you say without your awareness. For this reason, it is helpful to ensure any smart devices with a microphone are turned off.

• For email and instant message counselling, our emails/messages form a permanent record of our communications. For this reason, you are strongly advised to create a separate, private, secure, email/messaging account for this purpose.

3. Professional Code of Ethics

• I am a Registered Member of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP). My registration number is 375157 and you can view the status of my registration at http://www.bacp.co.uk/. I follow their Ethical Framework for the Counselling Professions, which you can download from their website. This requires that my work is supervised by another experienced therapist and facilitates my ongoing professional development.

• In the event of a complaint or concern about my work, please speak to me or send me an email. If this does not resolve the issue, please contact the BACP who offer a formal complaints process that I agree to adhere to.

4. Confidentiality and the privacy of your data

• I provide a private, respectful and confidential counselling service and consider the security of your personal information to be one of my highest priorities.

• You will be asked to read, understand and sign a Privacy Policy outlining how I retain, store, delete and share your data. You understand that counselling cannot commence until you have provided your informed consent to how your data is handled.

• I do not share the content of our sessions or the fact that you are receiving counselling. However, there are some situation where it may be necessary to share the information I hold about you and/or our sessions with another person or organisation. This includes:

• Reserving and paying for your session online

• Where there is a legal obligation

• When you or someone else is in serious or immediate risk of harm

• When I talk to professional supervisors about my therapeutic work

• In the event of a complaint

• If I refer you to another professional for help

5. Attending Sessions Online

• I offer counselling online using webcam, voice-over-internet, messaging or email. Therapy via these methods has differences, advantages and limitations compared to in-person sessions.

• It may be that working online and/or working with me is not suitable for your needs. If I/we identify this is the case, I will endeavour to provide you with details of a more suitable service but I cannot guarantee the availability or quality of that service.

• For webcam sessions, you will need a headset with a microphone, a good internet connection and a device capable of using the software listed below.

• For webcam, voice-over-internet and messaging sessions, will be asked to install software prior to booking a session. If you cannot install and run the following software, you should not book an online therapy session until you can find a suitable internet-connected device:

o Zoom (https://www.zoom.us/)

o Signal (https://signal.org/)

• You or I may encounter technical issues that delay our session or prevent it from taking place using our chosen method. Should this happen, you agree to use an alternative method of communication or an alternative application, to ensure the session can continue.

• I respect your confidentiality online. This means that I will never search online for any personal information you provide me, nor do I look up any social media profiles, blogs, posts or online activity that may exist about you or about people or things you discuss in your sessions. For this reason, I will not accept contact requests from you through any form of social media.

6. Ending therapy

• You can end therapy at any time. However, if you are considering ending, it can be very helpful to discuss this with me in a session prior to making the decision.

• There are some occasions where I may not be the best therapist for your needs, in these situations I would discuss this with you and provide sources of other suitable therapists.

• You understand that positive outcomes in therapy are not guaranteed and though many people report helpful change following a course of therapy, some people experience no change in symptoms or a worsening of symptoms.
